The secret to understanding income inequality

The secret to understanding income inequalityThe secret to understanding income inequalityAmy Goldstein has been a staff writer for thirty years at The Washington Post, where she shared the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. Her first book, Janesville, explores what happens to people and to the texture of a proud community when good work goes away. Walter Scheidel is Dickason Professor in the Humanities, Professor of Classics and History, and Kennedy-Grossman Fellow in Human Biology at Stanford University. His latest book, The Great Leveler, dives into how cataclysm and violence have reduced inequality throughout history. Both shortlisted finalists for the 2017 Financial Times McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award, Amy and Walter recently sat down to discuss the catastrophic events, both local and global, that drive and diminish income inequality.Amy It strikes me that you and I have both written books about changes in peoples economic standing, which boils down to writi ng about income inequality. But we did this in very different ways. I told this story through a microcosm, taking a close-up of a single community - Janesville, Wisconsin - that went through an economic trauma during a terrible recent time in ur nations economy. The Great Recession ended an auto plant that had, for nearly a century, provided the best working class jobs in town. You do this over the very long run, looking at the persistent effect of violence on haves and have-nots in many distributionspolitiks across history. What gave you the instinct that there might be some relationship between violence and wealth and income concentration?Walter A couple years ago, Thomas Piketty made a strong case that inequality in the middle of the 20th century did not go down just because of economic development and democracy, but welches really driven by the violent dislocations of the World Wars and the rise of Communism. When I read this, I wondered whether there might be a pattern all thro ughout history. So, since I am a pre-modern historian, my plan welches to survey history across hundreds and thousands of years. And I found that the argument he had developed for the 19th and 20th centuries held true for all of recorded human history - that whenever we observe a massive compression of inequality in income and wealth, there are major shocks of violent disruption behind it.I was focused on the factors that reduce inequality, but for the last 40 years or so, especially in the U.S., we have been witnessing a steady rise in income and wealth inequality. Do you have a sense of what has driven those developments in the more recent past?Amy Yes. I became interested in this work towards the end of the Great Recession, when there was a lot of job loss going on in this country. There was a great deal of focus on how bad the unemployment numbers were, and there wasnt much focus on what it was actually like to lose work, for yourself, your family, or the community in which you lived. I wanted to understand what really happens when work goes away, and I thought that focusing on one place that had schwefelgelbkreuzgas a lot of jobs would be a good way to illustrate this.Whenever we observe a massive compression of inequality in income and wealth, there are major shocks of violent disruption behind it.I picked the community of Janesville, which had s-lost what was the oldest operating General Motors plant in the country. It closed down two days before Christmas of 2008, right smack in the middle of this very bad recession. My story spans five years, exploring what happened to a number of people during that span. You talk about high inequality having an extremely long pedigree. What do you mean by that?Walter Thats a really good question, because I think people often confuse inequality and poverty. If you have the same degree of inequality thousands of years ago and today, being at the bottom of the distribution back then would be a much worse fate than it is now. So it is possible to apply the same measures of inequality across time, but they mean very different things.Amy You make an interesting point about relative versus absolute income, wealth, and inequality. The people about whom Im writing, the auto workers who lost their jobs, had had very stable, middle-class lives. They werent wealthy, but they were making $28 an hour, which were good working-class wages in this Midwestern community. They didnt all fall into absolute poverty, but they tumbled downhill, and that was quite a shock. One of the things I learned is that falling out of the middle-class is very different from having been poor all along. When they fall into economic trouble, people who were accustomed to middle-class lives were, for the most part, reluctant to seek or accept outside help from non-profits and government programs. They really just wanted good jobs again.Walter Thats right. I think thats actually a very unusual situation in world history. Because for hun dreds and thousands of years, people would take the established order, the established distribution of resources, pretty much as a given. If you were poor, your parents had been poor, so that was your outlook on life. But the situation we face now is rather unusual in that people look back at their parents generation and grandparents generation, and they observe correctly that something has been going wrong for some time. They cant hope to aspire to the same standard of living as previous generations did.Amy Thats right, at least in my microcosm. The Janesville Assembly Plant started turning out tractors in 1919, and it started making Chevys in 1923. So if you think about the number of generations of local people for whom these were the best working-class jobs, people had reason to have quite strong expectations that this work would persist, except it turned out that it vanished. You talk about what you call the four horsemen of violence. What are those horsemen, and why are they so powerful in diminishing inequality?Falling out of the middle-class is very different from having been poor all along.Walter Ive identified four major driving forces behind great reductions in economic inequality - the mass mobilization of warfare, transformative revolution, state collapse, and severe epidemics. Those factors have been more or less common over time, depending on what period youre looking at. The last two, state collapse and epidemics, were primarily phenomena of the more distant past, affecting the distribution of wealth in agrarian societies. Whereas the other two, like WWI, WWII, and the big Communist revolutions in Russia and China, are very much a manifestation of modernity that only occur in the 20th century. If a great plague strikes an agrarian society, there are fewer workers, the poor are less poor because they can command higher wages, and the rich are less rich. When states collapse, the entrenched elites lose power. Everybody loses in that scenario, but th e rich have more to lose, which compresses disparities in income and wealth.Whereas, in order to fight the enormous, industrial-scale World Wars, governments had to raise taxes to extremely high levels and intervene in the private sector. Capital lost value. There was inflation, physical destruction, any number of things that made the rich less rich and the poor less poor. And once you look at the Communist revolutions, its very straightforward. If you have Bolsheviks or Maoists who expropriate or kill the rich and impose a planned economy, inequality can drop to very low levels. So the mechanisms are very different, the environments are very different, but what all those historic occasions have in common is that they involve massive, violent shocks. Often millions, tens of millions of people lost their lives. These are very grim episodes of human history. But the ultimate outcome was that inequality was reduced.Amy In some way, thats the inverse of what Im looking at - one shock to a community, the closing of an auto plant that people thought would last forever. Over several years, I came to think of it as two Janesvilles emerging. There were people who were affected by this, and people who were not affected by this. And those who were not affected didnt always have a clear sense of what was going on among their neighbors. For instance, one partie the story follows is a social worker who was the school systems liaison for homeless kids in the community. She and a social worker one town over began to notice a growing crop of homeless, unaccompanied teenagers. They started raising money to create housing for these kids, and when they first started to go out into the community to talk about this, they were met with disbelief. There were people in town who just had no sense that this was happening right in their midst.Walter Actually, one of the lessons that I took away from your book was the role of labor unions. It seems to me that what happened in Janesville wa s also connected to a decline in the power and the density of membership in labor unions. And that also came to the fore in my own work, when I looked at why inequality had gone down so far in the wake of WWI and WWII. It wasnt just taxation, physical destruction, inflation, or other war-related effects. It was also an explosive increase in membership in labor unions in industrialized countries, which empowered people to take charge of their lives. To gain concessions from employers, organizing themselves to make sure that lower-skilled workers would not be left behind. Those who were not affected didnt always have a clear sense of what was going on among their neighbors. That development seems to have abated, especially over the last few decades. In the United States, union membership peaked in the late 1940s, and has been sliding ever since. Thats something that I think also mattered in Janesville. Do you agree?Amy I do. In Janesville, the workers had been part of the United Auto Wo rkers for a very long time. In fact, in what was called the General Motors Sit Down Strike of the late 1930s, which was the strike that cemented the UAW as the bargaining force for auto workers around the country, Janesville was one of the sites of that strike. So that union history is embedded in the GM workforce. It was what meant that people were earning $28 an hour, and that, for a long time, allowed people to retire after 30 years seniority with very good pensions and health benefits. The union is what propped up that middle-class life.Walter I think this takes us to one of the most pressing issues that we face right now, which is to identify policy measures that could actually make a difference. In the U.S. a wide range of policy measures are being proposed - fiscal measures, targeted taxation - to siphon off wealth from the famous one percent, hunting down wealth concealed in off-shore accounts, investing in education to make it possible for people who are hurt by globalizat ion to improve their situation. Even reaching all the way to campaign finance reform, in order overcome the polarization in Congress thats also related to inequality. So there is no shortage of measures being proposed. I just wonder which, if any, would actually make a difference in a place like Janesville?Amy Well I tried to take a look at job re-training, because its one of the few economic policies that both Democrats and Republicans tend to support. They have slightly different visions of how to do it, but both conservatives and progressives think that if people lose a job, they should try to acquire skills to do a different kind of job. A lot of federal money goes into job re-training efforts for what are called dislocated workers. One of the reasons I picked Janesville was that it has a technical college in town, a small school that specializes in vocational training. I was interested in trying to figure out whether this training was doing any good, because the countys Job Cent er, where people were referred when they lost their work, was encouraging people to go back to school and learn to do something else. And this college really knocked itself out trying to figure out how to help these traumatized, dislocated workers.I did an analysis looking at what happened to a cohort of people who had gone back to school, versus a cohort of laid-off people who had not gone back to school. And contrary to the common wisdom, people who went back to school were not better off in terms of their pay or their likelihood of full-time work a few years afterwards. Thats not to say that job re-training has no efficacy anywhere, but I think it really depends on the climate and whether new jobs are becoming available. The union is what propped up that middle-class life.Walter I was often accused of pessimism when I brought out my book because I emphasized the forces that push inequality even higher. Those forces are still out there. Globalization is still ongoing. Theres still heavy pressure on the kind of jobs that people lost in Janesville, theres a great deal of competition. Theres tax competition among different countries. There is ongoing progress in automation, which is going to affect jobs that have previously been protected. Theres a secular aging of the population in rich countries that is going to put pressure on the welfare state. There are very powerful forces out there that will make it rather difficult for policy measures at the national, or even regional, level to make a real difference. Do you share my pessimism, or do you think there is some hope that we can find ways of making a difference?Amy Let me answer that with two contradictory thoughts. Theres a notion that, if jobs disappear in certain places, people should simply move their lives to where there are better opportunities for work. But I found in this community that people, for the most part, dont want to leave. Its a place where people have lots of family support, and multi-gener ational ties. Nearly a decade after the Janesville Assembly Plant closed down, there are people still commuting long distances to General Motors plants in other states to keep up their standard of living, and coming home every weekend or every month. Thats a lot of commitment to staying where you live. So thats one economic truism that I dont see playing out in this community. On the other hand, and this is a slightly more optimistic view, I discovered that the people of this community have a lot of resilience. When 9,000 jobs disappeared in that area in 2008 and 2009, all kinds of non-profits came together and formed coalitions to figure out how best to help people. And Ive come to think that this is partly a function of this communitys identity. Janesville is also the home of the Parker Pen Company, which was founded by a local man named George Parker in the late 19th century. And there was another local industrialist who persuaded General Motors to come to town. So I think these ec onomic foundations gave the community a real sense of self-determination that has prevented it from becoming a very angry or despondent kind of place, which easily could have happened with this many jobs that have gone away. The local unemployment rate had shot up to over 13 percent in early 2009. Its now down to around four percent, but the pay is nothing like people used to earn. Its going to take years to find out whether this community can fully rebound or not.The other thing that Ive learned is that losing work is a very personal experience. About a third of the people in this one county said that they or someone in their home had lost a job during the Great Recession, or shortly afterwards. And in a survey that was part of my research, we asked them, Are you embarrassed or ashamed to have lost this job? Over half said yes.And I found that so heartbreaking, because even when people are losing their work because of broad economic forces, in a place where thousands around them are losing the same kind of work, it still feels like a personal event.Walter There are many reasons to believe the future holds a great number of challenges - globalization, automation, aging. But at the same time, as you said, we should never underestimate human resilience peoples ability to make the best of a bad situation, to find new ways of improving their condition. And we can only hope that this is going to play a major role in the future. This conversation has been edited and condensed. Time to Self-Identify as a Military Spouse in your Resume

Time to Self-Identify as a Military Spouse in your ResumeTime to Self-Identify as a Military Spouse in your ResumeTime to Self-Identify as a Military Spouse in your Resume The Stars Are Lined Up for Military Spousestrainings in Ft. Rucker, AL and San Diego, CAby Bobbi Rossiter,USMC Military Spouse, Speaker and Military Spouse Coachmilspouse June 5, 2019In May, I gave three Military Spouse trainings on cousines to deliver an important message Now is the time for Military Spouses to self-identify as such, and TIME TO UPDATE YOUR RESUME BOTH FEDERAL AND PRIVATE SECTOR In the past, Military Spouses were afraid to disclose their status as a partner of tafelgeschirr personnel. They feared it would lead to employers rejecting their resumes due to their frequent moves and inconsistent work history. But times have changedA little background. Back in 2008, President George W. Bush signed Executive Order 13473 which requires federal agencies to do more to employ Military Spouses. Just since 2 017, the number of jobs specifically targeting Military Spouses has increased 70% on USAJOBS. On the private sector side, there has also been a push to hire more Military Spouses, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerces Hiring 100K Military Spouse initiative. However, if you dont identify as a Military Spouse on your resumes, how is an employer supposed to know this is your background? All the attendees at the trainings received federal employment expert Kathryn Troutmans new book, The Stars Are Lined Up for Military Spouses for Federal Careers, 2nd Edition, updated and just released in May. I was a contributing author on the book and my resume was included since I am an eleven-year Military Spouse. At the workshops, I talked about the excellent Military Spouse resume samples in the book, which show the three ways to self-identify as a Military Spouse on your resume (more on that later). There are six federal resumes and two private industry resumes in the guidebook. My first stop was on May 16th at Fort Rucker, Alabama where the training was held in the Army Community tafelgeschirrs Soldier Service Center building. The event was organized by Mike Kozlowski, a Ten Steps to a Federal Job Trainer as well as the bases Employment Readiness Program Manager. Fifteen Military Spouses participated, including those shown in the photo below. My session, The Stars Are Lined Up for Military Spouses, was in the afternoon, and it was a great follow-up to Mikes Ten Steps to a Federal Job Workshop in the morning.Bobbi Rossiter and Mike Kozlowski, a Ten Steps to a Federal Job Trainer as well as Fort Ruckers Employment Readiness Program Manager, with Military Spouse attendees at the bases training.I had two trainings in San Diego, so I promoted the events through a podcast interview with Adrianne Huls, of the San Diego Military Family Collaborative. I talked about how developing your professional career when youre a Military Spouse is a little like playing the game, Tetris. The mil itary is going to hand you different experiences and obstacles. How are you going to rotate those to get a foundation that will get you to your ultimate goal? You can listen to my interview on the San Diego Military Family Collaboratives facebook inc page.At the US Coast Guard Station San Diego on May 20th, I did intimate one-on-one trainings with two Military Wives. This was organized by Jennifer Conole, the Transition and Relocation Manager, USCG cousine LA/Long Beach. The final training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego was an all-day affair organized by Connie Vasquez, a Family Member Employment Assistance Specialist. Thirty-four participants gathered at the Bayview Restaurant, a gorgeous site on base. The Military Spouse Career Symposium started with networking with employment support staff from the region. Then the Symposium had numerous speakers, including Connie and myself in the morning. Due to this being a recruitment base, most of the Military Spouses w ere just out of school and starting careers. I thought it was wonderful for them to have all this information right at the start.Laura Torres (Careers Manager, Blue Star Families), Mina Threat (Transition and Career Resource Manager, MCRD), Bobbi Rossiter, Jen Conole (Transition Relocation Manager, USCG Base LA/Long Beach), Connie Vasquez (Family Member Employment Assistance Specialist, MCCS San Diego-Marine Family Programs/WRR)The Employer Panel in the afternoon was very affirming. Connie had brought in both federal and private sector employers, including the Social Security Administration, Hertz, and 24 Hour Fitness. The employers verified the importance of the Military Spouses identifying themselves. Otherwise they said they could interpret the disjointed work history typical of this group as a red flag.To me, this affirmation was worth the whole trip This is what we have been hearing, but to hear the whole panel say they are looking for Military Spouses but need to know who yo u are was wonderful. Military Spouses, you really need to make yourselves visible.Employers Panel at the MCRDs Military Spouse Career Symposium in San Diego.Yes, employers want to hire Military Spouses,so let them know thats you through your resume. All the trainings, based on the new book, offered three ways to self-identify as a Military Spouse1. By adding an Eligibility Statement or Your Military Spouse Status right at the top, under your name and address. On federal resumes, for instance, right away this points out that you are eligible to be hired on a non-competitive grund as a Military Spouse under Executive Order 13473. We consider this way to be mandatory for all Military Spouse resumes. (For federal resume example, landsee p. 47 in the book, Nicole Black, the entrepreneurial Military Spouse. For where to place this on a private industry resume, see p. 54, Nicole Blacks traditional two-page resume.)After that, you can add one of the following two ways to reinforce the messag e.2. By adding a Summary of Your PCS Order History. This helps to put your entire resume in context. Your PCS orders are why you have changed jobs frequently or may have periods of no employment. (Also on p. 47 in the book.) 3. By adding Professional Skills Gained Outside Employment While a Military Spouse as Your First Job Block. Ann, the Military Wife using this approach in her federal resume, hadnt had an official employer for 22 years. Yet she was able to use skills from various volunteer positions, including her functions maintaining a military household, to land a job as a Protocol Officer. (For federal resume example, see p. 80 in the book, Ann Jones, the long-time unemployed Military Spouse. For a private industry resume example, see my two-page traditional resume on p. 65).Another point I emphasized at all the trainings there are people at most military bases who we have trained in the Ten Steps to a Federal Job method. They can help you identify yourself as a Military Spo use on your resume so employers will know this about you. That includes in the States as well as overseas. Click here to find a trainer in your area. During my trainings in May, I kept referring the Military Spouses to their local trainers so they would know who they are and could go get additional assistance later. As the sessions wrapped up, I could see I had added a spark to the participants by letting them know that employers are looking specifically for Military Spouses. They were telling me, I have to update my resume so my background is there They were also encouraged about the federal job search, knowing that the Ten Step trainers are available right on the base to support them. They can help you with your private industry search too.Its an exciting moment to be a Military Spouse. The stars are lined up for you your time is nowINTERESTED IN A STARS ARE LINED UP FOR MILITARY SPOUSES PRESENTATION at your base? 3D Printing Lab Tools

3D Printing Lab Tools 3D Printing Lab Tools 3D Printing Lab ToolsSpace telescopes, supercolliders, and mass spectrometers are great for zooming in on atoms, mapping cancer cells, or listening in on the Big Bang, but whos measuring whats happening in our own backyards? As it turns out, practically anyone can. Through technologies like 3D printing and smartphones, the growing citizen science movement is arming ordinary people with do-it-yourself (DIY) tools to collect laboratory-grade data from the world around them. Researchers have frequently rallied the community of lay people interested in their discipline to pitch in on large-scale projects like species counts, weather and climate observation, and even the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. Citizen science isnt new, but its gaining new ground, and new levels of interest from mainstream scientists. This year, in fact, a new conference called CitSci debuted in 2015 as an add-on to the national meeting of the American Associa tion for the Advancement of Science. The event united a diverse group of teachers, environmental activists, public policy types, and card-carrying scientists to help define the field and identify opportunities to get the public involved in science. Increasing access to laboratory tools is a key focus of grassroots organizations like Public Lab. The group believes sensitive, accurate environmental measurements are possible without a multimillion-dollar analyzer, and that people can be trained to collect solid data without a PhD in hard science. Public Lab is taking aim at the high price of lab equipment by producing and selling its own some for as cheap as $10. The Public Lab on-line store, for example, offers a growing suite of kits and ready-made tools like spectrophotometers, pH meters, and cameras all orders of magnitude cheaper than their laboratory-grade counterparts yet apparently sufficient for the day-to-day duties of citizen science. Additive manufacturing though totenst ill a niche in the technology of citizen science is poised to make higher-end measurements more available to the citizen science community and to educators like Jack L. Summers, PhD. I think that 3D printing and low-cost open-source microcontroller electronics might revolutionize how science is taught and practiced, he says. Summers, a chemistry professor at Western Carolina University, says he is a relative newcomer to 3D printing technology but is impressed by the availability of online resources and consumer-friendly software to ease the learning curve. The available resources have made it easy to go from zero knowledge and experience to the point where I am comfortable designing and building the pieces that I need for my projects, he says. By making the code available, it will be possible for people to develop open-source instruments without going through an instrument company. Summers bought his first 3D printer to make pumps and valves for automated liquid handling. I was o riginally making parts out of wood. That approach had problems with reproducibility, requiring precise cutting, drilling and fitting the parts together. With the 3D printer, each time I make a part, it fits without any further modification., he says. Now in the process of writing software to control the individual components of an automated pH measurement system, Summers plans to share his finished product with his students and the public. I believe that the availability of our designs for pumps and valves can be incorporated to make a large variety of different instruments, he says. For example, it should be fairly straightforward to make instruments to automate repetitive steps in chemical synthesis. I plan to build an instrument that will make synthetic peptides. Such instruments already exist, he said, but are priced beyond the reach of his and many other laboratories. Additive manufacturing is also a target for study by groups hoping to hack into the emerging field of 3D bioprin ting. BioCurious, a Silicon Valley hacker group focused on biotechnology, has launched a community project around a home-built bioprinter created from old CD drives, an inkjet cartridge, and an open-source Arduino computer. Hackers with interests ranging from biology to programming to microfluidics gather every Thursday evening to experimenting with uses such as 3D-printed leaves and custom-printed microfluidic devices. Mathew Lippincott, Public Labs director of production, says there are several 3D-printed spectrophotometer projects replacing high-end gear used in lab tests including a new DIY analyzer dubbed Multisynq now in beta testing. Developers at Photosynq.org see the Multisynq as the means to developing a global database of plant health, but theres potential for other measurement protocols in environment or biomedical testing. The sub-$100 device is designed to collect raw data from the field including leaf images, chemical measurements, and sensor readings, which volunteer s send wirelessly to a central repository. 3D-printed parts are still too labor- and cost-intensive for us to replace more traditional manufacturing processes, Lippincott says. But they are a boon to our ability to collaborate remotely on prototype instruments like the Multisynq. Another prime example is a DIY version of one of the more esoteric lab techniques around, Raman spectroscopy. A hacker known as FlC took fifth place in the 2014 Hackaday Prize competition with a Raman analyzer combining 3D-printed optical components with a sub-$50 Raspberry Pi computer. The open-source ramanPi instrument characterizes a sample by measuring its molecular vibrations under UV light a phenomenon called the Raman effect. In a similar spirit, chemistry professors at Londons Imperial College recently told students to hit the bricks as in LEGOs in a competition to build and optimize a working Raspberry Pi-powered ultraviolet-visible spectrometer. Its all part of the same spirit of introducing ne w types of users to the idea of DIY data-collection. To that same end the National Institutes of Healths 3D Print Exchange is a public repository for 3D print models and plans for all manner of laboratory and test equipment. Lippincott says the citizen science movement relies on efforts like these. A lot of real-time chemical detection is being done with Raman and UV spectroscopy. We would really like to see more of these projects. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. Learn more about the latest technologies in 3D printing at ASMEs AM3D 2015. For Further DiscussionI think that 3D printing and low-cost open-source microcontroller electronics might revolutionize how science is taught and practiced.Prof. Jack L. Discipline is a significant portion of school administration. Keep in mind, the target is to remain concise and focused, which means you could keep attention of the hiring manager. A Secret Weapon for Principle Resume Showing some interests and activities outside your work experience could really provide you with a leg up over the remaining part of the candidates. Its mucksmuschenstill important to get them listed, however, as it shows he is also a talented educator with a lot of experience in the classroom. No students were actually hired, obviously, but their private information was provided voluntarily. In addition, the interviewer might notlage have the expertise in some regions to answer your questions or provide you more info. Details of Principle Resume One of the simplest approaches to learn about Pascals principle is using a U-shaped tube full of water. It is not only helpful for lifting heavy objects. Nowadays the AIDA principle isnt employed as an exclusive marketing and advertising approach but its still an important portion of advertising. The principle of common region is extraordinarily associated with proximity. Sooner or later, remember there are no hard, unbreakable rules regarding resume length. In the long run, you are going to have complete comprehension of each individual part of the issue. Whatever situation youve gotten yourself into, you can most likely get yourself out of. The point is, theres no ideal length of a resume for everybody. In addition, you have to make sure that the methods discussed to boost discipline are in reality followed and effective. 11 Things You Should Assess in Every Cover Letter You Read

11 Things You Should Assess in Every Cover Letter You Read 11 Things You Should Assess in Every Cover Letter You Read Welcome to Recruiter QA, where we pose employment-related questions to the experts and share their answers Have a question youd like to ask? Leave it in the comments, and you might just see it in the next installment of Recruiter QATodays Question Weve written before about what employees should include in their titelseite letters, but today, we want to approach it from a new angle How should hiring managers assess cover letters? What signs should they look for that a candidate is worth an einstellungsgesprch?1. Make Sure Its Not Too DenseMy No. 1 pet peeve on cover letters is vertically dense pages with information dating back to the candidates first award in elementary school. It takes 40 minutes to read through. I dont really have that much time to read through this, and I dont really want to. - Pierre Tremblay, Dupray2. Look for Personality, Promise, and ProofLo ok for personality, promise, and proof. Any candidate that can break free of the I am writing to apply for mold, clearly articulate how theyd solve your problem, and provide evidence from their past that proves their abilities is well worth your time. Why? Because the message reflects genuine interest. This candidate is leid just shooting from the hip. Theyre invested in the opportunity theyve done their research. Most importantly, theyve already visualized how they can create success for your team. - Erica Breuer, Cake Resumes 3. Is It Addressed to a Specific Person? One of the biggest signs a candidate is worth interviewing is if they addressed their cover letter. This should be addressed to a specific contact name.- Dana Case, MyCorporation.com 4. How Proactive Is the Candidate? Most applicants simply summarize their resumes in their cover letters. However, proactive individuals look for opportunities to provide value to a business before they have even been offered a job. One si gn a candidate is worth interviewing is if they offer specific advice in their cover letter for how the business could improve and ways they could help. This not only shows they have researched the company, but also demonstrates their ability to take initiative and generate new ideas.- Bill Battey, Mindyra 5. Check for Core ValuesI recommend hiring managers look for signs of a potential employees core values when assessing a cover letter. Employees can acquire new skills, grow in knowledge, and experience shifts in life circumstances, but core values never change which is why the fruchtwein toxic and irreconcilable form of misalignment between a company and an employee occurs when the values of the organization and the individual are opposed. - Chanel Dokun, LifePlan NYC 6. Do They Have Communication Skills?A cover letter establishes an applicants most fundamental formal writing skills. Writing a basic, single-page letter shouldnt be that difficult, and if an employee has a hard t ime communicating here, theyll certainly have trouble communicating in high pressure conditions, regardless of the position. - Adam Hatch, ResumeGenius.com 7. Does the Candidate Have a Track Record of Achievements?Great achievements dont necessarily need to be work-related to indicate success. Case in point Athletic achievements show the candidate is competitive and can work on a team leadership achievements show an ability to support and motivate others being part of a college Greek organization or social club demonstrates interpersonal skills volunteering shows the candidate can work with others toward common goals. A consistent track record of achievements is one of the best indicators of success in a new job. - Jordan Wan, CloserIQ 8. Customization Is KeyIs the letter generic (sent to all potential employers) with no specifics about the job, company, or how the candidate would be an asset? If it appears to be generic, the candidate has questionable investment in your company. They are just looking to get a job and sending out mass applications. - Laura MacLeod, From the Inside Out Project (Photo credit Joe Henson)9. Does the Candidate Get Your Culture? Before you assess your applicants cover letter, think about your company culture. Is it happy and light-hearted? Formal and businesslike? Identify the voice of your company, and then read the cover letter with that in mind. Ideally, it should read like it was written by someone who gets the company culture, because that means either the writer is a natural fit for the position, or they did their homework by assessing your companys website and other brand touchstones and then bothered to fit the letter not just to the position, but to your brand as well. - Rebecca West, Rebecca West Interiors 10. Grammar Indicates AttentivenessHiring managers should look closely for any grammatical errors because they speak volumes about a candidates attention to detail. I once received a cover letter from an applicant wh o claimed to have gone to a prestigious collage. I was not impressed - Timothy Wiedman, Retired Associate Professor of Management and Human Resources9. Does the Candidate Show Passion? The most important sign to look for in a cover letter is passion for the industry and for the role. Passion is the No. 1 indicator of strong work ethic and career longevity. Passion can be identified in two ways. First, look for signs of conscious, smart choices in the applicants career story. Second, look for signs of community involvement that tie to the candidates career. - Kelvin Jiang, Buyside Focus

How Setting Boundaries at Work Can Help You Unplug -The Muse

How Setting Boundaries at Work Can Help You Unplug -The Muse How Setting Boundaries at Work Can Help You Unplug For you, a standard workday just isn’t enough. Your boss depends on you to be available day and night, and you often bring work home on the weekends. Your colleagues and clients rely on you so much that you plan to be on call during your upcoming vacation, despite your desperate need to unplug. And maybe you’ve been asked to fly across the country on a few days’ notice so many times that you don’t even bother unpacking your suitcase anymore. While these constant demands on your time and attention may feel like an indication of career success, they can also seriously tax your energy and focus. Agreeing to everything a boss, client, or co-worker asks you to do can quickly thrust you into the role of office pushover and leave you feeling like you’ve lost control of your own time and career goals. The key to staying sane while succeeding at work is to set firm, self-respecting boundaries that help you make smart decisions about how you spend your time and energy. By taking the following steps to define your boundaries, assert them cooperatively, and stick to them, others will eventually do the same. Guard Your Time If you’re feeling stretched thin, it’s likely because you’ve overcommitted to too many priorities, projects, and people. To regain focus and control, you need to examine both your behaviors and the habits of the people you work with. You need to set boundaries so you can unplug. First, look inward. Instead of letting stress or a desire for approval influence you to immediately agree to every request, pause before you respond. Take a moment to evaluate the individual demand and its potential effect on your schedule, well-being, and goals. For conditioned people-pleasers, this can be a challenge, but eventually, it will help you get comfortable with pushing back on demands that don’t benefit you, so you can reserve your time for what’s truly important. Then, focus on your co-workers’ habits. To curb the assumption that you’ll agree to anything you’re asked to do, start responding to those requests with, “Let me check my calendar and get back to you.” This serves two purposes: First, you can actually look at your upcoming schedule and prioritize what’s already on your calendar. Second, it sets the expectation with your colleagues that you’re not going to jump on every request right away- or at all. Defining boundaries is also essential to making space for your personal goals. For example, if you’re training for a half marathon and have a long run scheduled for 6 PM, tell your client that a 5:30 PM meeting doesn’t work for your schedule and offer to send some availability for later in the week. By closely guarding your time, you’ll be able to elevate your own priorities, both at work and in your personal life. Unplug to Reenergize Achieving work-life balance in today’s always-on work culture can seem impossible. Checking email is often the first thing we do in the morning, and our constant accessibility doesn’t end until we send just one last email before bed. But never disconnecting from your devices or work is a surefire path to burnout. To set healthy boundaries, you have to closely examine your technology and work communication habits and behaviors. Ask yourself: What’s driving you to stay connected? Are you afraid of dropping the ball and letting your team down? Are you trying to prove to yourself (and everyone else) that you’re uber productive? Once you understand those underlying motivations, you can determine appropriate tech-related boundaries. For example, maybe you can let your colleagues know exactly when they can- and cannot- expect to reach you during the evenings (e.g., “I’ll be logged on at home until 7 PM, but then I’ll be out of pocket”). Or maybe, you commit to checking email once only each evening and weekend day. By appropriately limiting your availability, you can continue to support your co-workers’ needs, while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Look for Win-Win Situations No one likes to hear “no”- especially if they’re used to hearing “yes.” If you’re worried about how your boundary-setting will go over with your team, re-position your refusal as an opportunity to find a solution that will honor both your time and the company’s needs. Simply look for ways to compromise. For example, if your boss asks you to work over the weekend, let him or her know that you have prior commitments over those days, but suggest setting aside some time to review the project Monday morning. That will help him or her feel comfortable with the end deliverable and shows that you’re a team player- while still preserving your personal time. Work According to Process, Systems, and Contracts If your colleagues and clients have a hard time respecting your newly established boundaries, don’t be afraid to fall back on external policies and procedures for help. With clients, for instance, you can often leverage your existing contract. For example, if the scope of a project is growing out of control, you could say something like, “It’s no problem for me to pull together a new 90-day plan to accommodate these changes. I’ll add that into the contract. The additional charge will be $500.” Or, if you’re constantly being asked to work insane hours or perform tasks that are far above your pay grade, ask for a review of your job duties and compensation. Come to the table with evidence of the extra responsibilities you’ve assumed, along with your track record of successes. With that documentation on your side, you’ll have a much better chance of establishing some more realistic expectations for your role- or majorly boosting your salary and value. Setting self-respecting boundaries will help you achieve a more balanced work and personal life, which will boost your emotional wellness across the board and serve you well in the long run. 8 things youre spending too much money on and how to stop

8 things you're spending too much money on â€" and how to stop 8 things you're spending too much money on - and how to stop Sometimes financial stability takes a little bit of discipline. It can mean taking a look at all of our spending habits - big and small - and cutting out some non-essentials to be sure we can make it to our major financial goals. There’s a handful of things we all spend too much on, but a few painless tweaks can add up to major savings!1. CoffeeCoffee tops the list because, with a bunch of alternatives to this habit, it’s one of the easiest cuts to make.   If you’re the gal who rolls out to the Bux for a daily 3 pm fix, that can really add up! (Quick math - Our $5-a-day coffee habit can add up to $1,200 a year if we’re doing it every workday. At that amount, you’re well into fancy handbag territory - and wouldn’t we much rather be saving our money in that direction?)The FixWith a pretty minimal investment, it can feel like you have a  barista right in your own kitchen. Pop your morning brew in a reusable cute mug and you get bonus points for being a little greener. Ma ke note of the when and why you end up going  out for big ticket coffee purchases. We all need an afternoon break, but sometimes just a quick walk around the block can be an equally refreshing (and free!) pick-me-up.2. Gym membershipsGym memberships can be a solid investment if you truly are using them regularly and you’ve found a workout program that you stick with. If you’re ready to shop around for a new gym, there are a few ways you can save, like joining in a group or taking advantage of student discounts. The FixThis is a different number for everyone, but do the math of dividing your monthly fee into the number of times you actually go to the gym to get your “per workout” expense. If this makes you faint, the way I do when I see the price of a Soul Cycle class, then consider taking your workout routine  home to the living room  or outdoors.3. Work lunches“Treat ourselves Fridays” often turn into “I- was-too-busy-to-meal-prep Mondays,” leaving us stacking multip le work days back to back where we’re forced to buy our lunches. In many cities, this can easily be a $10 outlay, and doing it on the daily is an expensive habit to get into. The FixSave lunches out for a truly special occasion and schedule it with your work crew to make it something to look forward to. Resources abound for  healthy lunches we can make ourselves,  so our wallets and our waistlines will thank us if we can reign this one in!4. Late feesThis expense is worth getting under control ASAP because sneaky late fees not only rack up quickly, but also aren’t  great for our credit. If you’re routinely having this happen, it may be time to  revisit your home budget, but if it’s just a lack of planning, there are a few quick fixes. The FixPut as many of your bills as possible on auto pay - either through the service provider or your own bank. If that’s not possible, be diligent about setting payment reminders and alerts on your phone a few days before anything is due. An d did you know a lot of places will let you change your recurring bill due date? If, for example, it’s easier for you to pay a hefty bill at the end of the month versus the beginning, consider calling up the vendor and discussing your payment timing options.5. Brand name household itemsIn my dream home, my laundry room is filled with baskets of The Laundress and there’s a boujee hand soap in every bathroom. In reality, a lot of times we’re spending  way too much on name brand household cleaners or basics where a store brand alternative would suffice. Many store-labeled products in this category  perform about as well  as their famously named counterparts, so this is an easy way to trim expenses. The FixWe all know that big box purchases and online retailers often sell this stuff cheaper in bulk with recurring subscription orders. Make yourself more satisfied with these basics by decanting them into cuter bottles, and you won’t even miss the fancier stuff.6. Drinking outIf gra bbing a cocktail with friends has become your regular bonding ritual, the tab can add up quickly! About  51% of us  cop to heading to the bar at least once weekly - and we’re often tacking on a dinner out after that, making for a pricey evening. The FixPregame at home whenever possible and learn  how to stock your home bar. Oftentimes our plans involve “dinner and drinks,” and, let’s face it, that’s almost like ending up with  two  dinner bills at the end of the night if we’re stopping off multiple places. Building out a cute home bar will make you excited to entertain at home and save some cash.7. Trendy clothesWe all want our wardrobes to feel fresh and current every season. This can, unfortunately, trick us into dropping a lot of money at fast fashion retailers and sometimes result in a closet full of clothes that either won’t last or won’t look quite right in another year. The FixLimiting ourselves to just a couple of trend pieces per season ensures we’re set up for a timeless wardrobe with quality pieces. Quality classics can come at a variety of price points, so this doesn’t necessarily mean you need to spend like crazy on clothes. It just means we all know that in a couple of years we won’t need an entire closet of bell-sleeved sweaters.8. TransportationExtra transport expenses are slipping into our lives more quickly than ever! Many of us have passed on having a car, but adding up ride shares and public transit can often equate to the fixed expense of owning a car.The FixFor most of us, grabbing an Uber when we could just designate a driver or even take a longer walk is a major culprit of overspending in this category.  Committing to a primary mode of transportation - either your own car or public transit - will help shave off unnecessary expenses. (And if I were the responsible gal I really wanted to be, a chic travel umbrella would keep me from shelling out for a $10 cab every time it rains.)This article was originally publish ed TheEverygirl.com.

Career Resurrection How to Identify Top Candidates from Declining Fields

Career Resurrection How to Identify Top Candidates from Declining Fields Career Resurrection How to Identify Top Candidates from Declining Fields Postal service, data entry, textiles, semiconductors, journalism, farming- these are just a few of the occupational fields that are declining, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Whether it’s because of increased automation, offshore outsourcing or shifting consumer behaviors, many competent workers have found themselves in the unfortunate situation of being out of a job for reasons beyond their control. These candidates from declining fields could be untapped sources of talent for your organization. When reviewing applicants from declining fields, consider these factors. Attitude Losing a job to a plant closure or outsourcing is a big blow. It’s normal for anyone to experience some anger or bitterness. Having to find a new career is scary, but being adaptable means converting challenges into opportunities. When interviewing downsized candidates, listen closely to the story they tell. Be on the lookout for candidates who go into victim mode. For example, if a longtime factory worker whose plant closed tells you, “Well that’s just the way things are now. Everything’s made overseas. Im the last of a dying breed,” they might be resistant to retraining and infuse your workplace with a negative attitude. A comment like I liked what I did, but now it’s time for me to learn something new. The world is changing,” indicates a more positive outlook. Trainability Many candidates who have been in a career for years don’t know exactly what they want to do next. Those with a positive outlook will embrace the opportunity to attempt something new and do something about it. They may enroll in local job training programs, volunteer or take community college classes. In the interview, look for evidence of effort in the direction of a new career. If you’ve been overlooking candidates from declining fields in search of that perfect fit, but have noticed a significant number of applicants from one specific field, take a look at O*Net’s job summaries to look for transferrable skills. O*NET lists the tools and technology, knowledge, skills, abilities and work activities for each job, and could reveal hidden opportunities with candidates from other fields. For example, the skills required by a farm worker include active listening, critical thinking, complex problem solving and judgment and decision making.” Those skills combined with abilities that include “control precision,” “static strength” and multi-limb coordination” suggest that a career in construction- for which the outlook is bright, according to O*NET- could be a good fit. All it takes is the candidates willingness to learn the tools and technology of a new trade. In addition to evidence of enthusiasm, probe for how they learn. An interview question like, “Tell me about a time when you had to learn something new and you didn’t like it at first,” can give you an indication of how adaptable they are. While its very common to experience initial resistance to new processes and procedures, many people grow to like a new way of working once they get used to it. Loyalty   Being the last person standing in a shrinking field could be interpreted as lack of ambition, but it could also be viewed as loyalty. Whether a candidate has been working in a dying field for five or 25 years, you’ll have evidence of their work history. Job-hopping is on the rise, so those who have managed to stay in one field show a dedication to work that is in increasingly short supply. Probe for information about their work history and the reasons behind previous job changes. For some people, job stability is more important than career growth. For them, the right opportunity in a new field for which they have appropriate transferrable skills could be a stroke of luck. For you, it could result in one less position to fill two years down the road. How to change your life every 90 days How to change your life every 90 days Most people are going to be in the same place in 90 days as they are right now. In fact, most people will be in nearly the same place in 1, 3, and 5 years. Most people are living day-to-day.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! They aren’t actively sprinting toward new and exciting futures. They aren’t looking back and being blown away by all that has recently happened. They aren’t becoming more and more confident by the evidence all around them that they are powerfully designing their ideal life. You can do this, though.Every 90 days, you can watch as your life expands and transforms before your eyes. You can watch as your health, income, relationships, time, and happiness all improve. This is the best way to live. It’s why you are here and what will bring you joy.Dan Sullivan, the founder of Strategic Coach, has a simple 4-question exercise that: Gives you a sense of joy and pride for what you’ve accomplished Confidence about what you’re currently focusing on Excitement about what your future holds Clarity about the few things that really matter Here are the 4 questions, and how you can use  them:Last 90  Days“Winning Achievements?  Looking back over the past quarter, what are the things that make you the proudest about what you have achieved?” - Dan SullivanTake 2 minutes and write down all of the things that have happened in your life over the past 90 days. What are the personal and professional goals you’ve accomplished? It’s crazy, but if you take a few minutes to simply reflect on what has happened in your life, you’ll realize that far more has happened than you remember. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day.It’s easy to be focused on the here and now.But taking just 2 minutes to reflect on the past 90 days will blow your mind by all that has happened.Even more, when you get better at structuring your time and focusing on only those things which matter to you, you will get better at accomplishing HUGE goals every 90 days.90-day goal cycles are perfect for making huge progress and then reflecting on w hat you did, and then making better plans for the following 90 days. You can get to the point where every 90 days you’re achieving more than most people achieve in a year. Or 5 years.Right now“What’s Hot?  When you look at everything that’s going on today, which areas of focus and progress are making you the most confident?” - Dan SullivanConfidence is a byproduct of having a life you’re proud of and excited about.Take 2 minutes and make a list of the things in your life that give you confidence about what you’re doing right now.Don’t filter or edit yourself. If you’re continuously moving forward in your life, then the things you’re focused on RIGHT NOW should be quite different from the things you were focused on 3â€"6 months ago.You should have made some huge progress in the past 90 days, which opened up new doors.Every 90 days, you could be focusing on bigger and more interesting projects.Your life can continuously look different and better.Your workouts could be different and more powerful.Your health and fitness could be better - allowing you to feel better and have more energy. You could be making more money. You could have deeper and more profound connections and relationships. These things give you a sense of confidence because you can see by your current reality that you’ve made progress. Indeed, without progress, you can’t have confidence. But if you’re continually stretching and creating a bigger and better future, then you’ll be in a constant space of growth. If you’re growing and stretching, then your life will continue to get better.Your present reality will look quite different every 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. The quality of your life and your time will be different. The quality of your thoughts and habits will be better. You’ll be able to look at your current life, work, projects, health, income, routines, relationships, emotions and feel a huge sense of accomplishment. You can feel confident by the life you have. This confid ence, coupled with the increased sense of morale you’ll have gained by reflecting on the achievements of the prior 90 days will be a huge boost. You’ll begin feeling amazing.Next 90  days“Bigger and Better? Now, looking ahead at the next quarter, what new things are giving you the greatest sense of excitement? - Dan SullivanIs the future you’re sprinting toward exciting for you?It should and could be.It’s exciting to pursue greater growth and possibilities than you’ve ever had before.According to Dan Sullivan,  â€œIf you are constantly making your life busier, ten you are avoiding the future. If you are bored, then you’ve run out of future.”How big is your current future? How big are the next 90 days?Do they excite you with all you’re going to experience and achieve? Will you have to step way outside your current comfort zone to achieve all you want to?Will you have to learn an enormous amount?Take 2 minutes to write down all of the things you’re currently excited about. These should be both personal and professional. What are the experiences you’re going to create? What are you going to learn and master? What are the achievements you’re going to have? What are the doors that are going to open?90-day jumps“What are the five new ‘jumps’ you can now achieve that will make your next 90 days a great quarter regardless of what else happens?” - Dan SullivanTake 2- minutes to list 5 new jumps that if you achieved in the next 90 days, you’d be happy with your progress. What five things would make the biggest impact on your future? What five accomplishments would be the most thrilling and exciting to pursue?ConclusionYou’ve just taken 10 minutes to reflect on the previous 90 days, right now, and the next 90 days. What would happen in your life if you did this every 90 days? What would happen for you if you set HUGE ambitions and built your life around making those things real? How much could your life change every 90 days?If you did this consi stently, how wildly different could your life be in 12 months?Or 24 months?Or 5 years?Success isn’t rocket-science. It’s about getting really clear on what you want, and pursuing only those things. It’s about feeling a sense of accomplishment and confidence about what you’ve done, and using that confidence to create motivation to pursue bigger and better futures.Ready to  upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. The MBA Hiring Climate According to Recruiters

The MBA Hiring Climate According to Recruiters The MBA Hiring Climate According to Recruiters The GMAC corporate recruiter survey is out. What did the recruiters say about the MBA hiring climate? Looks pretty good! In the Asia Pacific, even better. In general, more companies are planning to hire MBAs this year than last, and MBA starting salaries are expected to increase overall, though half of companies expect no change.Heres a roundup of some of the reports more interesting finds. The traits and skills of in-demand MBAsAll the talk of late wanting the managers of today and tomorrow to embody leaders who are creative, innovative and socially intelligent seems to have been missed by many recruiters. The traits recruiters say they are looking for in MBA grads are initiative, professionalism, motivation and integrity, ability to deal with pressure/obstacles and goal orientation. Fewer than half say they desire MBAs who can listen, be persuasive or culturally sensitive, are tactful, can delegate well, or are empathetic.Given that, communications skills are, somewhat contradictoril y, by far the most desirable skill recruiters look for (Does that mean they know they should be looking for strong communication skills, but just dont know what that entails?).Regarding technical/quantitative skills and a proven ability to perform, companies in the U.S., more than European or Asian companies, seek these things.Getting good grades was only considered desirable by 45 percent of recruiters. Even less valued prior work experience in similar or occupations or industries. What recruiters find important in a school One of the more interesting things to come out of the recruiter survey is how much heed recruiters continue to pay to the much-loathed and ravenously-observed MBA rankings when choosing which schools to recruit at. The rankings are becoming an increasingly important criterion to recruitersalmost as important as their existing school relationships, their prior experiences with the school, and the quality of the students.John Byrne offers one possible explanation:O ne explanation for the importance of rankings is that more companies are recruiting MBAs and they are often recruiting at more schools than they had in the past. If companies are increasing the number of campuses where they recruit, they use rankings to help identify schools theyre less familar with, says Michele Sparkman Renz, director of research communications for GMAC. The Financial Times ranking in particular has a much greater non-U.S. mix with two Indian schools in the top 25. Companies hiring employees for their operations in India may use that ranking and others to decide which schools in India would provide them with the best Indian talent.Only a quarter of the recruiters said a schools curriculum or location factored into where they recruited, and only one of ten said the quality of the faculty or the quality of the career services office mattered.MBA hires with the highest starting salariesConsulting gigs are tops in average starting salaries at $93K for MBA hires, $90K for experienced direct-industry hires, and $49K for hires with only a bachelors.New hire salaries in the technology sector are expected to average around $89K and virtually the same with experienced direct-industry hires.Grads who go to work for healthcare/pharmaceutical firms can expect an average yearly take of around $88K.Grads who take positions in the energy/utilities industries are slated to earn an average starting salary of $87K, about $10K more than experienced direct-industry hires. How companies are hiringThe best chance of finding a job is still through someone you knowmore than three-quarters of recruiters said they relied on employee referrals. Nearly as many said they use their companys website as a hiring strategy. The number of companies recruiting on campus increased this year to 68 percent. Only 35 percent reported social media as a hiring tool. What positions are in demandIn the U.S., finance (other than investment banking) jobs are the most in demand (42 percent), followed by marketing/sales positions (39 percent), then business development jobs, then consulting gigs. Are companies sponsoring?Only 15 percent of employers said they were planning to sponsor employees for full-time MBA programs, 25 percent for part-time and 21 percent for executive MBAs.Europe likes MBAs European companies are poised to exceed [by $260] the average annual starting salary that US employers plan to offer MBA graduates. In fact, European employers place a higher premium on MBA graduate hires compared to the salaries they extend to other new hires.[GMAC Corporate Recruiter Survey][Photo: Flickr/ Radiant Guy] Like us on Facebook

These Harvard researchers say open offices are productivity killers

These Harvard researchers say open offices are productivity killers These Harvard researchers say open offices are productivity killers When open offices came into vogue, they were supposed to promote productivity and collaboration among co-workers. And yet recent research suggests they do just the opposite. In an article published by Royal Society, Harvard researchers outline two recent studies they conducted that mean bad news for all the companies that have opted for an open office plan.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Harvard professor  Ethan S. Bernstein and  Stephen Turban  found two Fortune 500 multinationals with intentions to redesign their office spaces.  They monitored workers on floors that were getting a makeover to replace cubicles with more open areas by having them wear sensors to track how many face-to-face interactions they had before and after the transformation.Bernstein and Turban also measured electronic communication - emails and instant messaging - by using information that each orga nization provided to them. The first study took place over three week periods before and after the office redesign, and the second study was conducted similarly but over two eight week periods.Open = badWhat Bernstein and Turban found would likely dissuade any CEO from adopting a more open model.“Contrary to common belief,” they write, “the volume of face-to-face interaction decreased significantly (approx. 70%) in both cases, with an associated increase in electronic interaction. In short, rather than prompting increasingly vibrant face-to-face collaboration, open architecture appeared to trigger a natural human response to socially withdraw from officemates and interact instead over email and IM.”Bernstein and Turban hypothesize that part of the transition to digital communication is a desire to preserve privacy in an environment that’s more exposed. It’s also easy enough in an open office to look over and see that someone’s at their desk to receive an email, they wr ite.Participants in the first study sent 56% more emails to other participants after their office space was converted.   They also received more emails. Results from the second study indicated a similar trend.Meanwhile, executives from the first multinational company reported a decline in productivity after the redesign - the antithesis of what had been intended. When employees went against conventional wisdom and spent less face-to-face time as their office layout became more open, the organization suffered for it.Bernstein and Turban’s research marks a breakthrough in understanding open offices, as they used an empirical model to back their claims instead of relying on subjective surveys or observations as most past studies have done. And so their conclusions signal an even starker reality for the open office. The future of work may not look like broad open spaces after all. Instead, it appears that the companies who took a gamble on the open office design may have lost the bet. So will we all be returning to cubicles, or is remote work the next big trend? Only time will tell. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to answer the salary question in online job applications

How to answer the salary question in online job applications How to answer the salary question in online job applications What are your salary expectations? This is the minefield every job seeker must navigate carefully. In salary negotiations, you already know that saying a number out loud based on your salary history can weaken your stronghold if you know you are underpaid. When employers hear a low salary number right off the bat, your final offer is likely to be low too, according to psychological science.Your job is to not shoot yourself in the foot by blurting out your salary of pennies. You can keep mum and dodge the question by giving a salary range, or by stating a high starting salary number to anchor the negotiation if you are having an in-person conversation. But what if you are at the beginning of your job hunt and are filling out a job application on a website? This is the problem that the desired salary question in online job applications raises. You cannot dodge, deter, or explain your reasoning for not answering the question to an automated answering form. Here’s advice on how you can a nswer the salary question without getting accidentally disqualified for not answering the question:Try putting a word over a numberThe fear of leaving the salary question blank is that you may get disqualified by a computer system that will only surface candidates within a certain range or with complete answers. To avoid disclosing your salary history without getting overlooked, you may need to put something down. Salary expert Jim Hopkinson says that one option is giving an answer that does not disclose exactly what you want.“If you are filling out an application on paper, or if the online form allows you to type in whatever  text characters  you want in that field, then leave an open-ended response that defers the answer until later,” Hopkinson writes. If you are applying for an entry-level job, you can answer “entry-level” to the question. If you want to talk about this to a human interviewer, you can delay and say “to be discussed in interview,” or “negotiable,” he advises. If you have to put a number, pick a rangeBut what if this is an online form where you literally cannot proceed until you answer with a number? Then your best bet may be putting a salary range, Ask a Manager’s Alison Green advises. “Do your research and come up with a range based on what comparable positions pay for your experience level and in your geographic area,” she writes.Be careful about what numbers you put in the bottom of your range, however. That is likely to be the number  that human resources will later offer you. “If you give a wide range like ‘$40,000 to $55,000,’ don’t be surprised if you’re offered $40,000, because that’s what you told the employer you’d accept willingly,” she cautions.Above all, the goal is to avoid being taken out of the running for a job before you even have a chance to interact with a human employer. At best, you want to have the salary conversation when the interviewer is at maximum love for you and wants you as their first choice. That way, you can negotiate for the salary you deserve, not the one your previous low salary projects. When you are in the room with an employer who wants you as their next employee, you avoid having to  justify your salary expectations to an uncaring, unfeeling computer algorithm.
